My work spans across these areas of contributions:
1) Doing the Research: Serving as a research director of the CRSLA Lab, my team has developed clinical research studies on cross-cultural communication in speech and hearing sciences, which have been presented and published in peer-reviewed journals and conferences since 2002. This research has helped lead the profession in evidence-based education for clinicians and clinical services for clients.
2) Training Trainers/Clinicians: I serve as a founding director of the EBAM Institute (stands for "Evidence-based Accent Management"--which was specifically developed to lead the field in direct application of research through tools and trainings of clincians and students in an area that was formerly non-standardized. Our relentless work has been to create and promote evidence-based best practices for effective cross-cultural communication that is culturally-responsive, data-based, and research evidence-based.
3) Developing Accent Tools: A powerful tool developed through the collaboration between my research lab and the EBAM Institute is the assessment battery, the Comprehensive Assessment of Accentedness & Intelligibility (CAAI), leading the field since 2007 through multiple applications: nonbiased screening and recruitment of accent management clients, a comprehensive diagnostic process of accent-related communication issues, useful baseline for therapy, outcomes assessment, and more.
4) Training Health Professionals: Putting science, tools, and clinical knowledge to use, we then provide communication coaching services to healthcare professionals such as physicans, nurses, health administrators, and various staff for effective medical communication that help patient safety, quality of care, and effective team commnucation. This program has been administered in various hospital systems under different labels, e.g., Doctors without Accent Borders, Communication for Impact, and Cross-Cultural Communication Enhancement. Representative hospital systems where the program was offered long-term with significant outcomes include: Cleveland Clinic & Novant Health.
